He is a mobility service dog, a hearing alert dog and a medical alert dog. I have had him for about 7 years and have used a wheelchair for 6 of those years. During that time, when I was working as a physical therapist, Saint would help me get from place to place in the hospital and pick up anything that I dropped. I have been using a walker for the last year and retrieving items is still important because of my poor balance. Saint will close my bedroom door on command as well as the door between the house and the garage. He also carries things to and from my husband and myself. He loves to work! It’s all a fun game for him! He will also take the laundry basket from our bedroom to my husband in the laundry area and bring it back to me when it is empty. Perhaps his most important job is going to our freezer, opening the door and getting an ice pack for my head when I am having a Basilar Migraine and then closing the freezer door. My husband works so hard at home. After becoming paralyzed, I felt scared of being on my own and not having help when needed, but all that has steadily gone away to where now that isn't a problem. Lucy provides me with confidence throughout every day knowing that she is there ready to help as best she can. With this added confidence, Lucy and I have traveled around the country and had our own adventures. I have recently taken up a hobby called drone racing and RC model flying. These hobbies quite frankly involve crashing which seems to be the most exciting part for Lucy (which I find hilarious) because she is ready to lead the way to the location of where the aircraft has crashed. Not so obvious are the emotional benefits that a service dog can provide, particularly for Hugh. The progression of Hugh's Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is very difficult emotionally. The progression is relentless and demoralizing. Sully's constant and loyal presence can be very soothing and comforting for Hugh. When I’m in public people don’t notice my disability they notice Marty. I no longer get mean/weird stares. People stare at Marty with love and not at my legs. He’s helped me so much in such a short amount of time. Marty brings my medication in the morning. He helps me get my slippers, take them off, he even takes my socks off and much more I feel more confident in my own body because of him. I’m no longer dependent on anyone but my best friend. I am 57, married with an 11-year-old son. I was raised by my mother since my father died when I was under a year old. I am the youngest of 5 and the last to be working. I work full-time for a local police department, and I have been there since 1999. Bob is my second service dog, and he is such a good boy. My first service dog died this past August, and she was a Labrador like Bob, but I got her from a different organization. Bob chose me and he has been such a wonderful helper. Bob picks up items that I drop and hands them to me. He is my hands, and Bob is always at my side. My sisters have all moved to Tennessee and my older brother passed away 3 years ago, so Bob is my family.
